Compton named National Pitcher of the Week by NFCA

She's won a multitude of honors over her 4-year career, but today had to be a career highlight for Fresno State pitcher Jill Compton.

Early this morning, the senior saw her team enter the national Top 25 rankings for the first time in five years, coming in at No. 22 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and No. 24 in the USA Today/NFCA coaches poll.

Then she was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for a staggering 10th time.  And later in the day came one of the ultimate honors, as Compton was named the NCAA Division I National Pitcher of the Week by the NFCA following Fresno State's 5-0 start last weekend that included wins over two Top 25 programs in Tennessee and Utah, and four victories over teams from power conferences.

Joining Compton as a Mountain West honoree was first baseman Lindsey Willmon, who earned MW Player of the Week honors.  The transfer from Hawai'i hit .467 with five RBI and two home runs among her accomplishments at the Kajikawa Classic.  Willmon hit home runs in both of the Bulldogs' season-opening games on February 11.  Her blast, along with that of freshman Dominique Jackson, in the game against Tennessee, played a major role in Fresno State's dramatic and important upset win.  Willmon went 4-for-4 against the Lady Vols with a pair of doubles to go along with her home run.
