The latest, and presumably final, Bracketology before Selection Sunday from College Sports Madness has some intriguing news for Mountain West softball fans.
Mountain West champion Fresno State is listed as the No. 15 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to CSM, which is forecasting the Bulldogs to host a regional at Margie Wright Diamond.
CSM has Fresno State as the top seed in the Fresno Regional, along with second-seeded Texas A&M (an at-large pick out of the SEC), third-seeded New Mexico State (the WAC champion), and fourth-seeded LIU-Brooklyn (the Northeast Conference champion).
Such a scenario would mean the Bulldogs would open the NCAA Tournament against LIU-Brooklyn, and then if Fresno State were to win, it would meet the Texas A&M-New Mexico State winner in its second game.
One interesting note: That scenario forecast by CSM took a bit of a turn for the better today. Texas A&M, one of the teams the Bulldogs are up against for a possible host spot, was eliminated today in its opening-round game of the SEC postseason tournament. Also good news on that front: Two other SEC teams with whom the Bulldogs are competing for one of the final host spots -- Georgia and Missouri -- also lost their first-round games in the SEC Tourney today and were ousted on the opening day.
Georgia was 15th, Texas A&M 16th, and Missouri 17th in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll. Fresno State must take care of business this weekend versus UNLV though to maintain a realistic shot at hosting an NCAA regional.
